Lot Essay

The stool pattern corresponds to that of a pair of stools dating from the 1740s, which in turn relates to seat furniture designed by the architect William Kent (d.1748), such as a settee at Chatsworth, Derbyshire (see F. Lenygon, Furniture in England from 1660 to 1760, London, 1914, fig. 147) and a pair of stools sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 20 February 1987, lot 40.
