Lot Essay
This pattern of chair is copied from a set of eighteenth-century chairs that was at Copped Hall, Essex, seat of George Wythes the home of the Marchioness of Bristol's father. In 1917, Copped Hall suffered a fire which destroyed much of its contents, including the set of chairs. These chairs were copied from the set at Copped before the fire, for the Marchioness of Bristol's use in the private wing at Ickworth. A set of George III style chairs was sold by a descendant of James Thursby Pelham, Christie's London, 22 November 2007, lot 643 (£26,900).
