The artist's subject matter was the same as that of his famous older brother Philips's. As B. Haak, The Golden Age, 1984, p.387, points out, Pieter's level of excellence could occasionally approach that of Philips as is evident in the present lot, where an evening light gives the picture a particular warmth.
