Lot Essay

The most prominent sportsman might possibly be identified as William of Orange, Stadholder and King of Great Britain. The identification rests on a comparison with the figure in an almost identical composition but in reverse in the Rijksmuseum Paleis Het Loo, Apeldoorn, inv.no.281 (In het Zadel, Het Nederlandse Ruiterportret van 1550 tot 1900, exhibition catalogue, Leeuwarden, Bois-le-Duc, Assen, 1980. p.113, no.198, with ill.).
