Lot Essay

The view depicts the Muiderpoort after it was reconstructed in 1771, two years after the dramatic collapse of the earlier building. The works were supervised by the city architect Cornelis Krans; the programm of monumental sculpture was carried out by Antonie Ziezenis (see B.Bakker, Amsterdam in de achttiende eeuw, 1974, under no.26). A version of the subject, in summer, was offered at Christie's Amsterdam, 6 May 1993, lot 23, with ill.
