Lot Essay

As pointed out by E.J. Sluyter, loc.cit., the artist was a minor topographical painter, who often took his inspiration from prints by more important artists, generally of views in and around Amsterdam. The present lot belongs to the so-called middle period, circa 1810. It is to be compared with other similar village streets (E.J. Sluyter, op.cit, nos.7-11, figs.9-13).
