The sitter is depicted possibly in his role as chairman of the board of trustees; compare with the group portrait of the trustees of the 'Spinhuis' of 1714 in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Amsterdam (L. de Vries, Diamante Gedenkzuilen en leerzaeme voorbeelden, 1990, p.148, no.63. fig.63)
