A river valley, a farmstead beneath a cliff beyond, at sunset

The present lot is to be compared with the landscape of Venus, Cupid and Flora, signed F. Pennito, offered at Christie's London, 19 March 1982 (see Rotterdamse Meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw, exhibition catalogue, Rotterdam, Historisch Museum, 1994/5, p.103, fig.10). On the basis of the signature Pennito, I. de Jager op.cit., p.103, suggests that the artist may have worked in Rome.
