Solomon's Idolatry

As pointed out by Dr.U. Harting, in a letter of 12 September 1996, the present lot is a late work by the artist, to be dated to circa 1640. The signature is prefixed by the abbreviation DOV (De Ouden, the Elder) inserted to distinguish the father's work from his sons after the latter became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1639/40.

The subject is taken from I Kings XI:1-8.
