Lot Essay

In a letter dated 8 May 1989 K.G. Boon confirmed the attribution to Swart van Groningen. The drawing is possibly a design for a tapestry. A variant with minor differences is in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, Wegner, op.cit., no. 134, pl. 14. Wegner describes the Munich drawing as an early work by Swart, dating from the 1530s, and judges the present lot to be of better quality.
