Lot Essay

Professor Bolten upon inspection of the original has confirmed the attribution, and in a letter dated 28 August 1996 has kindly dated this drawing to late in the artist's career, and compares it to a study of the same subject in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, and will include it in his forthcoming catalogue on the artist's drawings. A comparable drawing was sold in these Rooms, 15 November 1993, lot 17, illustrated.
