Lot Essay

The composition is inspired by the painting of the same subject in the National Gallery, London by Cornelis van Haarlem, and Goltzius's print (Ill. Bartsch, III, 262). An attribution to Anthonis Sallaert (c.1590-c.1657/8) has been suggested.
