Lot Essay

Charles Dumas has kindly pointed out that this is probably a view along the dyke between Edam and Purmerend, near Axwijk, with the Purmer on the right. Two other drawings of this dyke by the artist are known; one, possibly dated 1761, in the Archives of Noord Holland, Haarlem; the other, also dated 1774, is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. La Fargue did other drawings of the area in 1773-5.
