Lot Essay

The sitters are the parents of the artist, who was a captain of the Amsterdam Civic Guard. His parents were probably cousins. A portrait of his sister by the artist of similar format and technique, dated 1751, was offered, Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 25 May 1976, lot 214.
We are grateful to Egbert Wolleswinkel of the Stichting Iconographisch Bureau, The Hague, and Bert Gerlagh of the Gemeentearchief Amsterdam for their help in researching this lot.
