Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1869
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Hand-blown glass bottles. Original corks and Château-branded capsules, lots 463 to 465 heavily corroded. Rich, dark treacle colour. Lot 460 with bin-soiled label, level base of neck. Lot 461 with corroded capsule, bin-soiled and creased label, level base of neck. Lot 462 with remains of label only, vintage visible. Level into neck. Lot 463 with bin-soiled and slightly damaged label, level mid-shoulder. Lot 464 bin-soiled label, level mid-shoulder. Lot 465 very bin-soiled label, level low shoulder
Tasting Note: Picking commenced 15th September. Five notes, first amoroso coloured, magnificent crème brûlée bouquet and flavour in 1969. Next a superb magnum to celebrate its centenary with Peter Palumbo at the Coq Hardi, Bougival; a good bottle in 1984, and one four years later, with a Cruse label and bouquet like 'apple crumble, peaches and crème brûlée. Most recently, with an oily original cork, also with a Cruse label and its contents mimicking the ostentatious brass wire criss-crossing the bottle: warm amber with orange-gold highlights; enticing, creamy, well tempered crème brûlée and orange blossom bouquet that opened up, exotically. Sweet, assertive, raspberry-vanilla flavour, very fragrant but quite a bite. How was this achieved? No matter, I thought it was delicious. Last tasted Sept 1998. ***** M.B
