Both compositions are based on sheets from a print series depicting the Five Senses by an anonymous engraver after designs by Jacob de Backer (see F.W.H. Hollstein, Dutch and Flemish etschings, engravings and woodcuts, Amsterdam, 1949, I, p. 52, nos. 2 and 5, both illustrated).
