Lot Essay
In the year 1800, the European world was to be surprised by a portrait by Jacques-Louis David, of Jeanne-Françoise Julie Adélaïde Récamier, which showed her wearing a classical Greek robe. This painting by the widely known artist would be the starting point for the early 19th century affection for Greek fashion which was to arise around Europe.
The young woman portrayed in this painting was the young Jeanne-Francoise Adélaïde Récamier, also known as Juliette Récamier, who was one of the most known society beauties of the day and one of the leaders of the French literary and political circle of the early 19th century. She was born in Lyon in 1777 and married Jacques Récamier, a 43-year-old banker, at the age of sixteen.
Because Juliette Récamier befriended Madame de Staël and other famous artists from the time who were not exactly in favour of the contemporary government of Napoleon I, she was eventually exiled from Paris.
The present lot is a copy after the painting by François Pascal Simon, Baron Gérard (1770-1837), from the year 1805, which is kept in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
