Lot Essay

According to Sona Johnston, the present work may be a study for the artist's painting Nantucket Girl (1882, oil on canvas, 22 x 15 in., Kennedy Galleries, New York). Nantucket Girl, the finished version, was included in the Brooklyn Museum's 1946 exhibition Theodore Robinson, 1852-1896, and is listed in the catalogue for the exhibition by John I.H. Baur as no. 151.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being compiled by Ira Spanierman and Sona Johnston.
