Lot Essay

Barker continued making paintings based on found objects until 1965 when he made the present work and lot 177. He created these by spraying aerosol paint through real underclothes used as stencils to create actual-size replicas. As with his sculpture, it was a way of taking a found object as a starting-point from which to produce a credible stand-in for it. Besides Vest - Orange and Pants - Red, White & Blue there is one other in the series entitled Pants.
