Lot Essay

A similar plate is illustrated by Beurdely, op.cit. p.54, fig.29. The author also illustrates a print by Nicolas Ponce after a painting by Antoine Baudouin which was the source, and notes that the plate inspired François Boucher to paint a large picture now hanging in Kenwood
