Lot Essay

The modelling of the present group is Giambologna's first representation of The Rape of the Sabine which he conceived and sent to Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma in 1579. This then evolved into the monumental marble group, which incorporated a third figure, inaugurated in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence, in 1583.
