Lot Essay

The tea-table, with fretted brass tray-rail on Grecian-scrolled altar tripod, is conceived in the French manner and relates to a pattern in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1793 (pl.29). A similar table is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol III, p.208, fig.20. A related parquetry-top table, also embellished with ring-bearing lion masks, was sold Christie's, London, 26 November 1996, Lot 185.
