Of oval form with cornucopia handles above lion masks, the border chased with fruit and applied on either side with grotesque horned masks, painted all over with classical scenes of gods and goddesses with attendants in woodland settings, scenes of man-to-man combat and a boar hunt around neck, painted inside base of foot with lake-side scenes, the small detachable, domed cover applied with female figure finial

Further details
Hermann Ratzersdorfer was active in Vienna 1843-81. Born 1817 in Pressburg (now Bratislava in present-day Slovakia), his father was an antiquities dealer. At end of 1843 Hermann moved to Vienna and established himself as a master silversmith, exhibiting at the Viennese Trade Exhibition of 1845, also at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, the 1855 Paris Exhibition and others in London & Vienna, respectively in 1871 and 1873. He retired in 1881, turning his business over to his son, Julius.
