Further details
This piece betrays the origins of the maker who must have taken inspiration for his design from Jewish ritual silver seen in his native Eastern Europe. The finial is typical of those encountered on spice boxes whilst the foot is reminiscent of the bases of Torah finials. Katz was part of the Jewish diaspora who fled persecution in Russia and Poland during the late 19th century and settled in large numbers in London's East End. John Culme in his Directory of Gold & Silversmiths records Katz from 1890 in the East End's Commercial Road.
