A Pair of Japanese Vases
Kutani, early 20th Century
Decorated in iron-red and gilt decorated with two panels one with a fierce looking shishi clutching a ball on a background of stylized clouds, the other with two dragons quarrelling over the sacred pearl on a similar ground, each panel surmounted by the head of a shishi and resting on a phoenix, the sides with a tiger to one side and a dragon to the other, the base with a band of lappetts containing stylised dragons, the shoulder with various geometric designs and two roundels of phoenix, signed to the base Kaga Nishiki sei Hakujyu (Shiraoki) Kenchu (?) tsukuru
