OF EMPIRE STYLE, LATE 19TH CENTURY
Comprising six fauteuils and a canape, each with a reeded and lotus scroll carved toprail centred by a pair of griffins flanking twin towers, the scrolled arms with swan neck supports and the bowed seat with rosette and anthemion clasps on naturalistically carved legs with paw feet, each inscribed to the underside '2081 4198'

Lot Essay

The chairs celebrate the triumph of poetry with their chimerical monopodiae of Apollo's sacred swans terminating in griffin paws; while their golden bas relief tablets comprise the poetry deity's lyre emblem guarded by sacred griffins, together with palm-flowered cartouches displaying the sunflower sacred to Apollo the sun-deity.
