Black pottery amphorae of this shape have been produced from the Warring States period and throughout the Han Dynasty in the province of Western Sichuan. Amphorae of this type are rarely found in museums or private collections. A similar example is illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meijintang Collection, vol.1, pl.65, pp.52 and 53.
