THE 1924 VINTAGE IN BORDEAUX ***
"An abundant crop of attractive wines despite the poor spring and wet summer. Saved (as in 1978) by a flawless September. 'Divinely decadent; advancing age but opulent charms' to quote me, not Parker. I have an astonishing number of notes, just short of one hundred, many dating from the 1970s, partly due to the number coming on to the market. I see from a Christie's catalogue of 1973 that we listed a range of 21 '24s from one French cellar, including all of the first growths. ***" MB, Vintage Wine
Château Branaire-Ducru
Opposite Château Beychevelle is Château Branaire-Ducru. As opposed to the pronounced verticality and towering spires of a château like Pichon Lalande, Château Branaire-Ducru is a squat, classical structure, representative of the architectural style of the late 18th-century. If the château is simple and minimalist, the wine itself is not. As any number of right bank garagistes have proven, the château doesn't have to be impressive to turn out an impressive wine. Château Branaire-Ducru is sometimes referred to as "the other Ducru," with its higher classified neighbor Château Ducru-Beaucaillou getting much of the attention. Château Branaire-Ducru does not deserve to be overlooked, however.
