Lot Essay

Thomas John Dibdin, playwright and actor was a godson of David Garrick. In 1791, Dibdin achieved his goal of a theatre-royal appointment when he played Mungo in Isaac Bickerstaff's The Padlock when the Manchester theatre reopened after a fire.
