Lot Essay

The present pair of lionesses derives from the Egyptian basalt pair removed from the Temple of Isis and brought to Rome in antiquity. They now crown the fountains to the base of Michelangelo's monumental stairway connecting the Campus Martius to the Capitoline Hill and the Piazza Campidoglio.
