Lot Essay

To aid potential clients visualize his designs Linke is known to have commissioned watercolour proposals of individual pieces and whole interior schemes. One such watercolour depicts a jardinière directly comparable to the present lot, of which Payne notes that there is no record of it having been executed (see C. Payne. François Linke, 1855-1946 - The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, p. 441, pl. 519).

The use of Linke's characteristic leaf-clasped scallop-shell and swept-foliage framed frieze, as well as satiné trellis parquetry, all add to the appeal of this jardinière, the rarity of which is heightened by the fact that it has remained in the family of the present owner since it was acquired sometime during the 1940s.
