RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY
In the central image, the Mother of God speaking to the kneeling repentant man, Christ seated on his Mother right arm and displaying the stigmata, on the corners four medallions with portraits of the Mother of God (clockwise): the Kazanskaya, the 'Life-giving Source', the 'Joy to all who Grieve' and the 'Burning Bush', the frame showing two more images of the Mother of God, the Tikhvinskaya and the Feodorovskaya, flanked by the decollated head of John the Baptist and St. Nicholas, at the left and right portraits of selected saints, the lower part with a text, the border identifying the represented figures and events, the brilliant gold details standing out against the saturated colours of the composition
