Liu Baojun is believed to have been a scholar-artist. There are only seven known inside-painted bottles from his hand, six dated to 1904 and one to 1907. Two of the 1904 group in the Meriem Collection were sold in these rooms, 19 September 2007, lots 604 and 683.

One of Liu's bottles painted with birds is illustrated by Moss, Graham and Tsang, in The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle. The J & J Collection, p. 728, no. 446.

The "boneless" painting technique here resembles the work of another Beijing artist from the turn of the century, Ziyizi.
