Lot Essay

The poem by Yomo no Utagaki Magao (1753-1829) reads:

Hi tomoshite nani kurakaranu yoru no tabi
Inoraba kitsune fukuya sazuken

Every dark night, light up a fire and if you pray,
a fox gives a fortune.

Ikkei was born in Nagoya and was the son and pupil of Yoshikawa Yoetsu.

For other examples of Magao's collaboration with ukiyo-e artists, see lots 139 and 143.
