Lot Essay

Here a horned demon masquerades as a priest. He wears a monk's black robe, holds a rosary and has a gong or drum that he beats with a small hammer. His monk's staff lies at his side. He recites the nenbutsu, an invocation to Amida Buddha. The subject seems to be a satirical comment on corrupt Buddhist priests or may suggest a repentant demon.
