Oyo copied the pair of screens by his ancestor Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), a National Treasure in the Mitsui Memorial Museum, Tokyo. Little is known about Toyo, but according to Higuchi Kazutaka, Toyo probably had a close relationship with Yamamoto Tokoku (d. 1890) who worked in Kyoto for the northern branch of the Mitsui family as a painter. Toyo's diary Kioku for the years 1896-98 when he worked as a painter for the Mitsui family is preserved in the Mitsui Bunko Library.
