Lot Essay

Wheel-thrown, slender-walled wares with the natural cloud and spot staining that appear on this vessel are known in Japan as amamori after the pattern stains leave on a roof after it has leaked. Acquiring their stains from repeated use, the wares have been prized in tea circles for centuries.
