The Vatican Museums celebrated marble tripod is recalled by this candelabrum stand, with its foliated pillar on lion-headed altar plinth (see G. B.Piranesi, Vasi, Candelabri etc., 1778; and H. Moses, Collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra etc., 1814. Two related candelabra, with fruit-garlanded and lion-headed tripod pedestals, were executed by the Exeter carver Charles Cole (fl.1816-4) sold Christies New York, 22 April 1989 lot 143
