The arched top sketchily carved with the figure of Bodhidharma standing atop waves, the bearded figure wearing full belted robes and a cowl, with a large straw mat slung over his back where a single shoe, a fly whisk and a crutch are also visible, holding a scroll in his left hand and perhaps part of the crutch in his right hand, with a nine-character inscription above

Chen Man Sheng (pseudonym Chen Hong Shou) was a native of Jiejiang province and was well known for his calligraphy, seal carving and for his simply carved Yixing teapots.

The inscription appearing on the upper left corner of the present wrist rest reads Fa Lao Lian Hua Yi Man Shen Fanggu (In the style of Lao Lian, Man Sheng imitating the ancient). Lao Lian (1598-1652), whose full name was Chen Lao Lian, was an acclaimed figural painter of the late Ming period.
