Lot Essay

Ruyi scepters, one of the most auspicious symbols in China, have been made in almost every medium. Most popular during the Qing dynasty, ruyi were often presented as gifts, and came to be associated with the ability to grant wishes, the word itself translating as 'as you wish'. This auspicious wish is strengthened by the use of the shuangxi motif, which is also a popular symbol for weddings.
