A VERY RARE YAOZHOU CELADON CARVED VASE
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY, 11TH CENTURY
The slender ovoid body deftly carved with a wide band of three lotus blooms and a lotus leaf borne on an undulating stem, all on a combed ground and set between narrow bands of overlapping petals below the shoulder and above the slightly splayed foot, the shoulder applied with two sinuous dragons with undulating bodies confronting a pair of lug handles, all below the tall narrow neck flaring to the galleried mouth rim, covered overall with an olive-green glaze, the knife-cut ring foot and base left unglazed

A very similar Yaozhou celadon vase is illustrated by J. Wirgin, Song Ceramic Designs, Stockholm, 1960, pl. 5c (Fig. 1). Wirgin also illustrates, pl. 5a, a related vase in the Seattle Art Museum lacking the petal borders and with two additional loop handles, as well as another comparable example, pl. 5b, which was excavated in Sanyuan county, Shaanxi province. See, also, the similar vase, but decorated with pendent lappets around the body, excavated in 1974 from Binxian, Shaanxi province, now in the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, illustrated in Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Osaka, 1997, p. 85, no. 108.
