Delicately decorated in a painterly technique in grisaille and shades of iron red with pavilions nestled in a mountainous landscape by a waterfall and meandering river, a scholar on a horse being led by a young attendant crossing a bridge in the foreground

Lot Essay

The inscription on the base of this dish, De Cheng Zhai zhi, may be translated as reading 'Made for the Studio of Virtue and Honesty', and appears on porcelains ranging in date from the Qianlong to the Daoguang reigns. A set of four Qianlong examples was sold in these rooms, 18 September 2003, lot 373.
