DICKENS, Charles. Sketches of Young Gentlemen. Dedicated to Young Ladies. London: Chapman and Hall, 1838.
8o. (160 x 100 mm). 4 pages publisher's advertisements at end. Frontispiece and five plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] (a bit spotted at the edges). (Lightly browned.) Original pictorial blue-green paper boards (backstrip chipped with loss); red cloth folding case. Provenance: Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Kitton records a fragment of a diary kept by Dickens in 1838; "I began the 'Sketches of Young Gentlemen' to-day. One hundred and twenty-five pounds for such a book, without my name to it, is pretty well. This and the 'Sunday [Under Three Heads],' by-the-bye, are the only two things I have not done as Boz." The dozen or so sketches were written in reply to Caswall's pseudonymous Sketches of Young Ladies, an "ungallant attack upon the fair sex." (See previous lot). Kitton, pp. 64-65; Yale/Gimbel B63.
