DICKENS, Charles. A Tale of Two Cities. London: Chapman & Hall, 1859.
8o (221 x 141 mm). Etched frontispiece, title and 14 plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"]. Original green cloth, blindstamped on covers and spine, gilt-lettered on spine (some minor wear at corners and ends of spine, spine slightly darkened, two pale stains). Provenance: Centenary Testimonial label; George W. Brocklehurst (bookplate); Douglas C. Ewing (bookplate; sold Christie's New York, 7 April 1978, lot 79); Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, in the much scarcer secondary binding, second issue with p.213 correctly numbered. This copy is bound without the publisher's catalogue, which is found in some copies. Smith notes that this binding must come after the red cloth binding (see previous lot), since the signature mark "b" is not on the List of Plates and p.213 is correctly numbered. Eckel, p.90 (copies bound in green cloth are "VERY SCARCE"); Smith I:13.
