2 volumes, 8o (219 x 138 mm). "To the Reader" slip tipped in to first text leaf. 3-leaf publisher's advertisement at end, including 4-page catalogue dated November, 1865. Original reddish-brown cloth, decorated in blind on covers, gilt-lettered on spines, binder's ticket of Virtue & Co. (a few tiny pale stains, front cover of vol. 1 with a bit blistered, otherwise bright and fresh); red quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, with the very scarce "To the Reader" slip concerning the meaning of the title (lacking the 36- and 24-page catalogues at end of each volume as often, but including the alternate advertisements as described above). VERY RARE in fine condition and with both the advertisements and "To the Reader" slip. Smith I:15; Yale/Gimbel A150. (2)
