DICKENS, Charles. The Readings of Mr. Charles Dickens. As Condensed by Himself. David Copperfield and Mr. Bob Sawyer'sarty (from Pickwick). Illustrated Copyright Edition. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1868.

Two parts in one, 12o (164 x 104mm). Separate title-page for each work, each with full-page wood-engraved frontispiece by S. Eytinge Jr. Original pale blue-gray printed wrappers bearing advertisements for the "Diamond Series" and the "Illustrated Library Editions" of Dickens's works (very slight rubbing to spine, otherwise in very good condition); quarter blue morocco slipcase.

Provenance: Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), thirteenth President of the United States (his ink signature dated 18 December 1867 on front wrapper); Kenyon Starling (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. MILLARD FILLMORE'S COPY of a rare authorized American edition of two of Dickens's redacted readings from David Copperfield and Pickwick Papers. As an early bibliographer notes: "On the occasion of Dickens' last visit to the United States in 1868, Messrs Ticknor & Fields, of Boston, issued his various readings in small 12mo pamphlets. They included several readings that had not been included in the London, 1858, edition, and are therefore the first edition in this form" (Wilkins, Early American Editions of Charles Dickens, pp.32-33, recording 11 editions in this series).
