A small red sandstone stele of Saraswati
India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, 12th century
Finely carved in openwork with fhe four-armed goddess seated on a low lotus throne, holding her vina in two hands, a manuscript in the third and a flower in the fourth, her face with lotus-shaped eyes and the hair pulled into a high chignon backed by a star-burst halo, with her swan vehicle at her feet, devotees with folded hands on either side, and celestial beings with garlands above
