General Slatin Pasha was one of the most colourful characters of the Colonial period, born in Austria but decorated by Queen Victoria, his adventures in the Sudan read like a 'Boy's Own' adventure story and he is the subject of two novels, 'Fire and Sword in the Sudan' and 'Between two flags'.
