Lot Essay

After Procaccini's altarpiece of the same subject now in the Brera Pinacoteca, Milan (M. Rosci, Giulio Cesare, Soncino, 1993, pp. 82-3, fig. 12). Carlo is the patron saint of Milan. The painting was commissioned around 1620 by Cattaneo Adorno for the chapel dedicated to the saint in the church of S. Francesco d'Albaro in Milan.
