Albert Mell
Albert Mell (1917-2007), professor of Music, Queens College of the City University New York is best remembered by his colleagues and students for the passion and commitment he brought to the subject he taught for thirty-eight years. His family and friends knew of another talent dear to his heart, his love and dedication to playing chamber music as an amateur violinist. Amongst American violin collectors, connoisseurs, and violin makers, however, Mr. Mell is better known for his life-long commitment to the Violin Society of America where he served as editor of its yearly journal for almost thirty-two years. Always the firm and exacting task-master with the writers who produced works for the VSA journal, Mell is responsible for establishing the periodical as the invaluable research reference it is considered today. During his life, Mell forged friendships and relations with connoisseurs and makers around the world, most notably the Italian master, Carlo Bisiach.
